Why You Should Hire a Photographer Who Specializes in Interior Design Photography

If you’re an interior designer or architect, I’m going to drop a truth bomb for you, hiring "just any photographer" isn’t going to get you the beautiful, impactful imagery you deserve. Sure, any photographer with a camera can snap a few pictures of your design, but there’s a huge difference between photography and interior design photography.

I get it, we’ve all seen those gorgeous home photos on Instagram or in magazines. But trust me when I say, there’s a whole lot more going on behind the scenes than what meets the eye. And the biggest mistake you can make as a designer is hiring someone who’s not experienced in interior design photography.

In this blog, I’m going to break down exactly why hiring a photographer who specializes in interiors will take your design portfolio to the next level, and how I got the stunning shots from Brittney Lane Interiors’ photoshoot even though the weather had other plans (spoiler: we used strobes and lights to save the day!).

What’s the Difference Between Interior Design Photography and Other Types of Photography?

At first glance, interior design photography might seem like just another category of photography, but let me assure you, it’s a whole different ballgame! When you’re working with interiors, it’s not just about snapping pretty pictures of a room. Interior photography is about showing the essence, the emotion, and the unique design elements that make each space special. A skilled interior photographer knows how to make those elements pop on camera.

A photographer who doesn’t specialize in interiors might not have the technical knowledge needed to accurately present the scale, lighting, and texture of a space. For example, photographing a person requires lighting that flatters their features, but photographing a room requires light that enhances the space. The goal is to create images that make people feel like they’re there, experiencing the space firsthand. It’s about creating a visual story that draws the viewer in.

Why Hiring an Interior Design Photographer is Crucial

I cannot emphasize this enough, just hiring any photographer is not going to cut it. It’s like going to a random doctor and asking for surgery. You need someone who is skilled in the subject matter they’re working with.

Hiring a photographer who specializes in interior design photography ensures that the photographer knows how to approach your work in a way that highlights the details and makes your design shine. From lighting to composition, an experienced interior photographer has the technical know-how to make your designs look their absolute best.

A Perfect Example of Interior Design Photography

Let’s talk about a recent photoshoot I did with Brittney Lane Interiors. This shoot was a great example of why working with an interior photographer who understands the ins and outs of the craft is so important.

The day started off with a challenge: rain. And not just a little drizzle—nope, it was a full-on, gloomy downpour. Now, for those of you who aren’t familiar with how lighting plays a huge role in interior photography, let me just tell you, this could have been a disaster. The house was looking dark and dreary in person, which, honestly, made me nervous at first. But I was ready to work my magic.

I collaborated closely with my assistant on lighting. We had to use strobes and lights to mimic the bright, airy feel that would normally exist on a beautiful, sunny day. By strategically positioning the lights and tweaking the settings, we created the illusion of natural light flooding the space, something that would have been impossible with just the dreary, rainy light we were working with.

Once the composition was set up, we started styling the spaces. Every piece was carefully arranged, every object in place. We’re talking about the details here, making sure that the right amount of greenery was in the frame, adjusting the furniture to create the perfect visual flow, and finding that perfect angle that would make the space look alive in photos.

The thing is, this took time, planning, and a bit of trial and error. But that’s the magic of working with someone who specializes in interior photography. I didn’t just go in, snap a few pictures, and call it a day. I was invested in telling the story of Brittney’s designs. I’m passionate about showing the energy of each space, and I take the time to get every detail just right.

Tips for a Successful Interior Design Photoshoot

Now that I’ve shared a bit about the photoshoot, here are some tips you should keep in mind when planning your own interior photoshoot:

  1. Hire a Photographer Who Specializes in Interiors: This is the most important tip I can give you. Working with a photographer who specializes in interior design photography will ensure that the final images align with your vision and showcase your work at its best.

  2. Lighting is Key: Interior design photography is all about lighting. Natural light can be amazing, but it’s not always reliable (like when you’re dealing with a rainy day in Dallas). A skilled interior photographer will know how to manipulate light, whether it’s artificial or natural, to create the look and feel you want for your photos.

  3. Collaborate with Your Photographer: The best shoots happen when the designer and photographer work together. Make sure to communicate your vision, the mood you want to convey, and any specific details you want to highlight in the space. I love collaborating with my clients to ensure we’re all on the same page when it comes to styling and composition.

  4. Don’t Skip Styling: A well-styled space looks infinitely better on camera. This doesn’t mean everything needs to be perfect, but rather that the space should be thoughtfully arranged, with attention paid to how each piece fits into the overall design. And yes, sometimes that means rearranging a pillow 12 times until it’s just right (guilty!).

  5. Be Patient: A great photoshoot takes time. It’s not a race. It’s about getting everything right, from the light to the composition to the details. Trust the process, and don’t rush through it. You’ll be so glad you took the extra time when you see the final results!
