Home Tour: My Non-Traditional, Colorful Take on Bold Holiday Decor

One of the best things about being a DFW Interiors Photographer is you get all these harebrained ideas to photograph your own house, so you can practice your photography skills and try out new methods and techniques without the added pressure of a client peering over your shoulder. It’s one of my favorite ways to pass the time these days, so when the holidays started quickly approaching I made the decision to deck out my home for the upcoming 2023 holiday season. These past few years have felt especially heavy for humanity, so I wanted to inject some joy into my day to day life.

I knew I would need assistance doing so, as I’m somebody who gets severely overwhelmed when faced with numerous options. When Tyler of Garrett Interiors mentioned to me while at Happy Hour one Friday evening that he would like to start offering holiday decorating services to clients, I knew he would be the perfect person to join forces with since he’s known to bring plenty of bold color to just about every space he designs.

We had a couple meetings and he asked me what my requests are, and I said I wanted a lot of non-traditional color. Boy oh boy, did he deliver. We decided to decorate three rooms in my home, my formal dining room, my living room, and the eat in kitchen banquette area.

Some disco ball ornaments I promptly purchased.

My Living Room: Blue, Yellow and Purple Tree with Colorful Christmas Decor

Tyler’s mood board for the living room wanted to play off the yellow, blue and purple found in my area rug and incorporate more decor in that color scheme. I loved the high contrast the black and white glass ornaments provided so I knew I wanted to decorate my live edge coffee table with them. I also opted for more colorful pillows, and that peppermint pillow. She’s so cute!

My Formal Dining Room: A Copper Orange Tree and Plenty of Colorful Decor

Tyler’s mood board for my formal dining room showcased an abundance of color. We opted for an orange or copper tree with black and white ornaments, an ornate table scape showcasing gold garland, plenty of neutral candles, bottle brush trees, and some holiday decor pieces. One of the black bookshelves lining the wall was removed to make space for a colorful lit wreath studded with pink ornaments.

Eat In Kitchen Area: A Christmas Window Village and Blue Ornaments Hanging from the Ceiling

Tyler incorporated some red and green traditional colors in my eat in kitchen area, which we both admitted was probably our least favorite room on the mood board, but we ended up loving the end result so much. We tied luminescent ribbon to lightweight large ornaments and hung them from the ceiling using eyelit hooks. We also hung some red holly garland across the top of the window and designed a little Christmas winter village in the windowsill.

Holiday Decor Interior Design Photography

Hiring a professional photographer specializing in Interior Design and Architecture photography to capture your holiday decor projects allows potential clients to see your work in a way that showcases the joy you can bring to their homes during the holiday season. Another bonus, publications are always looking for holiday decor ideas and it’s a surefire way to obtain some publication accolades.

The goal with your photography is to attract potential clients and customers who love your work and can visualize themselves living beautifully in the joyful, creative spaces you designed. Interior design photography shouldn’t just be for completed projects for clients. It should also include your own living space, so clients can develop a deep understanding of your own personal style, and it should include holiday decor as well. While wide angle images are essential, don’t let it be the only story told. Emotive, captivating imagery can be found in the vignettes, the tighter crop, and this holiday season with my own decor, I’ve fallen hard for the detail shots.

Are you wondering how to turn your design skills and expertise into more sales, bookings, and attract the type of clients you dream of working with. Elevating your marketing materials is the single greatest way to do that. You’ll be amazed at how the right photos and advanced editing techniques can really set you apart from the pack and show off your work in the best way possible. As a Texas-based interior design photographer, I’m so passionate about capturing the essence of every design through my lens and creating a two dimensional image through photography.

If you’re an interior designer looking for a photographer to capture your latest project, I’d love to work with you! My goal is to showcase your work in a way that tells the brand story you have in mind. You can contact me through my website to book a complimentary call, so I can learn more about your photography needs and business goals a little bit better.
